“We want a world-class safety culture…”
The waste and recycling industry does not have an enviable record on health & safety. LondonEnergy’s vision is to become the safest business not only in the waste & recycling industry, but to engage their teams so deeply into a new safety culture that they surpass best practice benchmarks demonstrated by the construction and oil, gas and petrochemical industries. However, an entrenched legacy of dated safety attitudes meant a unique approach was required.
After initial culture diagnostics, Force Four conceived the new Safety Culture and designed its visual style and language including a suite of 5 Guiding Principles – the bedrock of the culture. After launching the culture we then followed up with 12 months of culture engagement and health and safety training, ensuring that all 300 employees attended all 12 sessions. These sessions including real-time interactive digital voting which helped our facilitators judge levels of mood, feeling, belief and engagement in the room allowing us to deal with issues and challenges immediately and finely tune our facilitation approach in real-time.
Our collaboration with LondonEnergy resulted in award wins for Best Health & Safety Initiative from the Chartered Institute of Waste Management and the National Recycling Awards. The Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD) also awarded us with a Best Learning and Development Supplier Award for our work on this project.
The START Safely project successes have not only answered the business case, but have also galvanised a hitherto siloed workforce to work together to use their new learning experiences to attack other performance issues within the business.
